After winning the toss, WI decided to bat first and faced a disciplined bowling attack from SL. Both the WI openers were dismissed cheaply. There was no Gayle storm in the final. WI were struggling at 32 for 2 at the end of the first 10 overs. Then Marlon Samuels shackled out blasting 78 (56b; 3×4, 6×6) and Sammy scoring 26, helped WI to add 105 runs in the last 10 overs. WI made 137 for 6.
The score looked achievable for SL playing on their home turf, but WI bowled cleverly and intelligently. Dilshan has gone within minutes. Once Mahela Jayawardene 33 (36b, 2×4) was out followed by the dismissal of Kumar Sangakkara, the SL started losing the momentum. They were bowled out for 101.
This is the fourth failure for Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup. After the match, Mahela Jayawardene announced that he is stepping down from T20 team captaincy.
