American swimmer Michael Phelps claimed the 7th Olympic gold medal by winning the 100m butterfly event in a nail-biting finish. He thus equalled fellow US swimming legend Mark Spitz’s record of 7 Gold Medals in one Games set 36 years ago.
Phelps just managed to beat a strong challenge and a fright from Serbia’s Milorad Cavic by just 1/100th of a second. Serbia lodged a protest against Phelps’ win but a frame-by-frame replay confirmed the result.
With this laurel, Michael Phelps remains the only athlete in the entire history of Olympic games to have won 13 Gold Medals.
