The London 2012 Games on Sunday concluded with a colourful musical extravaganza. The closing ceremony, entitled “A Symphony of British Music”, was a celebration of Britain’s pop prowess, with Queen, Take That and the Spice Girls getting the Olympic Stadium rocking. A children’s choir was accompanied by a stirring rendition of “Imagine” by the late John Lennon.
Thousands of athletes who have entertained the world during the London Games were in the stadium watching the ceremony as a delirious sellout audience of 80,000 watched in awe.
The Olympic flame was slowly extinguished in the stadium and the legendary rockers The Who gave out a final salvo of thunderous hard rock followed by dazzling pyrotechnics.
The USA with 46 Golds topped the medal winners list while India for the first time managed a tally of 6 medals including two silver and four bronze.
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge declared the Games of the 30th Olympiad closed. The Olympic Games 2016 will be held at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
