Australia’s Ricky Ponting quit as Test and one day captain. World cup exit is the main reason for it. But he will bat for some time.
Ponting led Australia in more than 300 Test and one-day matches. He said he remained available for selection.
Michael Clarke will be his successor. After winning three consecutive world cups, Australia was not the strong favourite for 2011 cricket world cup.
Ponting is Australia’s leading Test run-scorer, and lies second only to Sachin Tendulkar on the all time list of Test centurions.
Ponting said quarter-final loss to India prompted his move. This decision to step down has been wholly and solely made by me, Ponting said.
