Sri Lanka won the toss in the third and final test at the Brabourne stadium, Mumbai, and at draw of stumps on the first day scored 366 for the loss of 8 wickets. Tillakaratne Dilshan scored his 11th Test century (109). The Sri Lankans had a good start before slumping to 188 for four but recovered to reach a comfortable 366 for 8. Angelo Mathews (86 not out) and Muttiah Muralitharan (0 not out) were at the crease.
The Indians bowling lacked consistency to put pressure on the batsmen who managed to score at a brisk pace right through the day on a testing track.
Harbhajan Singh took 4 wickets for 107 and Pragyan Ojha 2 for 97, while Zaheer and Sreesanth claimed one wicket each.
