1st Test 1st Day: England 229 for 5
Winning the toss and electing to bat England ended the first day at the score of 229 for the loss of 5 wickets on a placid track at the MA Chidambaram stadium, Chennai. Andrew Strauss cracked a composed 123.
Strauss and his opening partner Alastair Cook (52) provided a solid launch pad with a 118-run partnership but the quick dismissals of Ian Bell (17), Kevin Pietersen (4) and Paul Collingwood (9) helped India to come back into the game.
For India, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh took two wickets each, while Amit Mishra got the wicket of the century maker.
