UPA: Lokpal to be a constitutional authority
The UPA-II government proposes to confer constitutional status on the proposed Lokpal on par with the Election Commission.
Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said the government was working on a very strong Lokpal bill that will come with a constitutional amendment which will give the Lokpal the status of a constitutional authority. He further stated that the Lokpal would be more powerful than the Election Commission with far greater powers.
Political observers say that the new thinking of the UPA-II government on Lokpal seems to be designed to outmaneuver civil society activists as well as political opponents as it comes at a time when the Hazare campaign has upped the ante again, and coinciding with the inauguration of L K Advani’s rath yatra against graft.
