The Maha-Kootami or grand alliance of four opposition parties, TDP, TRS, CPI and CPM failed to take off as scheduled on Wednesday with Telugu Desam and Telangana Rashtra Samiti unable to iron out differences over sharing of seats in the coming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Despite continuous consultations, the two parties could not come to an amicable solution. The TRS leaders held out threats of going it alone in the elections.
With stalemate continuing, Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu hurriedly called the leaders of State CPI and CPI (M), K. Narayana and B. V. Raghavulu, for discussing the ticklish issue and exploring ways of convincing the TRS leadership.
This was a huge embarrassment for leaders of opposition parties as the much-awaited announcement did not come through and questions are now being raised over their public display of unity.
