TRS ballot-paper plan backfires?

Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K Chandrasekhar Rao’s game plan to get 70 independents to file nominations in the Telangana by-polls seems to have an adverse effect. The electoral symbol of TRS is the car. But the independents may get the symbols like van, tempo, auto, tractor and other four wheelers which may confuse the voter. Even a long ballot paper with 70+ names may also create confusion among the voters.

Realising its own folly, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti on Monday got several of its contestants to withdraw their nominations in constituencies where by-elections are to be held using electronic voting machines. In all, 435 candidates remained in the fray in 12 segments after the deadline for withdrawing nominations ended on Monday.

However, in places where the TRS succeeded in forcing the EC to use ballot papers, the numbers did not change much. In Warangal West, there are 74, in Yellareddy 75, in Koratla 67 and in Huzurabad 69.
