Ramachandra Guha was in Hyderabad to launch his latest book Makers of Modern India. The book deals with 19 well-known personalities.
Ramachandra Guha said that the demand for separate Telangana is genuine. It has been proved beyond doubt that progress is possible with smaller states.
The country can be divided into 45 – 50 states, says Guha. Revolutions emerge when peoples’ aspirations are not met. It is a historical fact. There were several movements for states on the basis of language, he said.
Guha cited the examples of Punjab which was divided into three states Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. These three states are ahead of several Indian states. After demarcation Gujarat and Maharashtra achieved phenomenal development. Chattisgarh and Uttarakhand too achieved tremendous growth. Jharkhand is facing problem from mining mafia. There is great necessity for smaller states in India now, he stated.
In the UPA at centre Left parties in place of DMK should have done good to the country, feels Guha.
