Speaker seeks legal opinion on MLA resignations
The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker, N. Kirankumar Reddy, held a meeting with legal experts on Tuesday evening on the course of action to be taken on the resignations of 141 MLAs belonging to various political parties hailing from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.
The meeting was attended by the advocate-general D.V. Seetharamamurthy, additional advocate-general A. Sudarshana Reddy, legislature secretary, Raja Sadaaram, former legislature secretary, E. Sadasiva Reddy and legal advisor to the legislature, Jandhyala Ravi Shanker.
The meeting which lasted for nearly two hours discussed the en masse resignations of the legislators and the subsequent legal repercussions if all of them are accepted. The meeting took note of the situation and concluded that never did so many MLAs resign en masse in the history of the country’s legislature.
It was felt in the meeting that there were no specific judicial pronouncements on limiting the powers of Speaker in deciding on the resignations and he is empowered to take any decision he feels appropriate. However, he sought an opinion in writing from the advocate-general about the legalities involved in the case.
