Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has been nominated as the Vice-Chairman of the Southern Zonal Council by the Centre on Tuesday. His Tamil Nadu counterpart M. Karunanidhi was holding the post till now.
Zonal Councils provide a platform to resolve differences and disputes between the Centre and States and amongst States. The Southern Zonal Council comprises Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Union Territory Puducherry, besides Andhra Pradesh.
The objectives of Zonal Councils include working for national integration, curbing the acute growth of State consciousness, regionalism, linguism and particularistic tendencies, enabling the Centre and State to cooperate and exchange ideas and experiences and establishing a climate of cooperation amongst the member States.
