In his inaugural address to the two-day National Executive meeting of the Bharathiya Janatha Party (BJP) in New Delhi on Saturday, the party President Rajnath Singh took responsibility for the party’s defeat for elections to Lok Sabha.
Rajnath stated that it was not a national defeat for the party as the results varied from state to state. However, he ruled out distancing the party from Hindutva ideology. He elaborated on national justice and said the elections were not a referendum on cultural nationalism or Hindutva.
This is the first major gathering of the BJP leaders to discuss the electoral failure. Yaswant Sinha and Vijayaraje Scindia did not attend the meeting. Even Arun Shouri, who is not a member of the national executive of BJP, issued a public statement on the letters written by Yaswant Sinha and Jaswant Singh.
