Quota bill for women to be tabled
The Women’s Reservation Bill seeking to earmark 33 per cent seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the state Assemblies will be introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The Union Cabinet on Monday night approved the controversial bill in its present form.
The UPA and NDA are divided over the issue. The Samajwadi Party, RJD, Janata Dal (United), Lok Janashakti Party have been opposing the bill on the grounds that it would not give justice to women belonging to OBC. However, the Bahujan Samaj Party and Dravidian parties have been championing the reservation policy.
