Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf resigns
Succumbing to the threat of impeachment by the newly elected Parliament, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf resigned on Monday. This brings to an end the nine-year reign that survived with US backing.
Musharraf’s tenure as President started declining from the time he imposed emergency to pre-empt a judicial ruling on his October 2007 re-election, revoked the measure and quit as army chief under international and domestic pressure. He then became civilian president.
According to Media reports, a special aircraft was waiting at a military base near Rawalpindi to fly Musharraf out of the country. He may be allowed to stay in Saudi Arabia.
