Only 46% voter turnout in GHMC polls
Only 46% voter turnout in GHMC pollsPolling for the 150 wards of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) passed off peacefully on Monday barring stray incidents of clashes between rival party workers, a mild lathi-charge by the police and seizure of cash and liquor at a few places. Repolling is likely to be held in two polling booths in Malkajgiri where the votes polled surpassed the number of voters registered.
However, the GHMC voters were unwilling to come out and cast their votes as the poll registered a voter turnout of only 46 per cent. This was only slightly better than the 2002 MCH election turnout of 43.27 per cent. In the general elections held in April, 2009, the 24 Assembly constituencies in the city recorded 56 per cent polling
The ruling Congress expressed confidence that it would win 65 to 70 seats on its own and the rebel Congress candidates to win another 10. The counting of votes will be held on November 26.
