The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, stated that the government will not unilaterally withdraw cases against students who indulged in violence during the agitations over the issue of the bifurcation of the state. There are 1,667 cases booked against 8,047 persons.
The CM said that the government had already withdrawn about 500 cases and would take a decision at an appropriate time on the pending cases. He said that the government has been trying to ensure that the withdrawal passes judicial scrutiny.
Opposition parties including the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, the Telugu Desam, the Praja Rajyam, the BJP and the Left have been putting pressure on the government to withdraw all the cases.
