Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy, Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh, announced that bottled mineral water would be supplied to all villages in the State by March 2010, starting with tribal areas and other remote areas that are prone to water-borne diseases.
The Chief Minister asserted that this scheme was feasible as the erection of a plant to provide mineral water to a population of 1,500 (five litres each) a day will cost only Rs. 2 lakh. The bottled mineral water supply to villages scheme will be launched on August 15.
The Chief Minister said that supply of bottled mineral water to villages would be first of its kind scheme in the entire world.
