Mayawati statues: SC issues contempt notice
The UP Chief Minister Mayawati has been on a statue erection spree and the Supreme Court has asked her government to stop all activities connected with construction of memorials and installation of statues.
However, the UP government has not stopped the work related to construction of memorials.
A Bench of Justice B.N. Agrawal and Justice Aftab Alam of the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to Atul Kumar Gupta, Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, asking him to show cause why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for flagrant violation of the undertaking given to the court to stop construction of all work at memorial sites in Lucknow.
The Supreme Court Bench directed Chief Secretary to be present in the court on November 4. The Bench asked Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam to assist the court as amicus curiae.
