Mayavathi’s dinner diplomacy: PM issue deferred
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati invited the Third Front leaders for dinner at at her new residence on the Rakabganj Road, New Delhi, to discuss Lok Sabha election strategies. However, there was no decision on any prime ministerial candidate.
After the dinner which sparked great political speculation, Mayawati, flanked by the leaders of the Third Front, read out a prepared statement saying they would contest elections to prevent a government led either by the Congress or the BJP.
H.D. Deve Gowda of the Jahata Dal-Secular (JD-S), Convenor of the Third Front, Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), A.B. Bardhan of the Communist Party of India (CPI), K. Chandra Shekhar Rao of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, N. Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party and other leaders of the Third Front attended the dinner.
