The government’s version of theLokpal Bill that was tabled in Parliament today. The proposed legislation doesn’t cover the Prime Minister during his or her term in office and may be investigated only after demitting office. It also excludes the judiciary and any action of an MP in Parliament or committee. It also excludes from the Lokpal’s ambit the judiciary and any action of an MP in parliament or any parliamentary committee.The institution will have powers to investigate all corruption cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly opposed the introduction of the bill, demanding that the prime minister should be brought within its ambit.
However, Team Anna protested by burning copies of the government’s version of theLokpal Bill. Civil society member Arvind Kejriwal said that Anna Hazare will go on fast on August 16 to protest the exclusion of several recommendations made by civil society members on the bill.
