Environment Ministry objects to YSR memorial

The Andhra Pradesh government proposed to establish a memorial to late YS RAjasekhar Reddy at Pavuralagutta in Kurnool district. The YSR memorial Smrithi Vanam was proposed to comprise a breeding centre for birds like peacocks and other wildlife in the forest area. The entire project is estimated to cost Rs 3.15 crore. The chief minister K Rosaiah is to lay the foundation stone for this memorial on September 2.

However, a committee constituted by the Union Environment and Forest Ministry studied the proposal and recommended that no permission be granted for the same. The panel reportedly based its recommendation on the proximity of the proposed memorial to the Gundla Brahmeswaram Wildlife Sanctuary a tiger reserve.
