EC rejects TDP nomination for Khanapur
The Election Commission on Tuesday rejected the nomination of Ramesh Rathod, the official candidate of the Telugu Desam from the Khanapur Assembly constituency in Adilabad district.
Rathod was sentenced to two-year imprisonment by the Laxettipet magistrate court in a case of attack against the forest department officials two years ago. The district court suspended the punishment as the case is still under trial. The Election Commission made it clear that as per rules the candidate would become ineligible if the conviction is not set aside. In this case only the punishment is suspended.
Following the rejection, the TD announced that Rathod’s wife, Sumana Bai, would be its official candidate. Rathod announced that he would approach the high court challenging the rejection.
There were also complaints against the candidature of Mallu Ravi, the Congress nominee from Jadcherla in Mahbubnagar district and Talasani Srinivas Yadav who filed nominations as the TD candidate from the Secunderabad Assembly segment. The returning officers, however, cleared their nominations. The nomination of Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, K. Kamala Menon, for the Adilabad Lok Sabha seat was also rejected.
