Worried by the slow spread of the monsoon, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, directed endowment officials to organise Sahasra Ghatarchana in Shiva temples to propitiate the gods for good rains as the monsoon is delayed.
Varuna Yagam will be organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams at other temples to please the rain god. Endowment and minority welfare officials will call on religious leaders to get advice on the Yagams. Dr Reddy also instructed that special prayers be held at mosques and churches.
Except Kurnool and Mahbubnagar, all districts have recorded deficient rainfall, ranging from 20 per cent to 99 per cent. The delay has caused a drastic fall in sowing of many crops. The total area sown in the state stood at 3.71 lakh hectares against the total area of 79.07 lakh hectares.
