The Union Government formed an elite anti-terror strike force called Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), with headquarters in Delhi, to deal with Naxals and also other terrorist and militant groups. Recently these forces have been deployed in West Bengal to deal with the Maoist uprising.
At least 2,000 CoBRA personnel have been moved to Andhra-Orissa border and Chhattisgarh to conduct operations against Naxal hideouts.
As part of this, two operational headquarters will come up at Jagadalpur in Chhattisgarh and Koraput in Orissa . The residential quarters for CoBRA personnel for 798 families will be built in Hyderabad and Silchar in Assam at an estimated cost of Rs 63 crore.
Authorities are planning to induct 10,000 personnel in the Cobra force. The CoBRA forces have been formed on the lines of the Greyhound forces of Andhra Pradesh which almost eliminated the threat of Naxals in the state.
