CBI raids: Congress-DMK alliance strained
The Congress-DMK alliance is tense and wary of co-existence after the CBI conducted raids on people close to Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi. Both Congress and DMK tried to play down the issue because both the governments at the Centre and Tamilnadu are interdependent on their mutual support.
Karunanidhi government’s survival depends on the support of Congress MLAs in Chennai, while DMK’s 18 MPs are crucial for the UPA government at the Centre. Besides, Congress, by steadily polling double digits in state elections, has emerged as a balancing factor in the bipolar polity of Tamil Nadu, dominated by DMK and AIADMK.
Though the Congress-DMK alliance is under strain, it may not lead to any political crisis either in Tamil Nadu or Delhi.
