Suspected ULFA militants set off a car bomb blast in Maligaon area and a cycle borne bomb blast in Dhekiajuli on the eve of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Assam. The militants used hi-tech explosives.
As per the last reports received, 7 people were killed and 61 others injured in these two bomb blasts triggered in Maligaon at around 2:00pm, sparking a fire that set ablaze two cars and 20 motorcycles and spread to a three-storey building housing the area police station. The Dhekiajuli blast occurred just hours later.
Assam DGP J M Srivastav said that these bomb blasts were the handiwork of ULFA militants 24 hours ahead of the outfit’s Raising Day.
According to a communication from Delhi, the Prime Minister’s visit to Assam tomorrow would take place without any changes in his itinerary.
