Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy announced that the state government would supply rice at Rs 1 per kg to benefit about 2.26 crore poor families from November 1, the State Formation Day.
The CM said the decision was a historical one and reiterated that the welfare measures launched by the Congress government would continue, although the financial position of the state was not so encouraging.
This newl scheme to bring the price of BPL rice down to Rs 1 a kg will cost the state an additional Rs 600 crore; the state already pays Rs 2,000 crore for the Rs 2 a kg rice scheme. The move will cover an estimated population of 7.5 crore. The state government supplies 3.3 lakh metric tonnes.
