AP Government suspends mining in Obulapuram
The Andhra Pradesh government implemented the recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) on the controversial Obulapuram mines and suspended mining activities in six mines and transportation of mined materials.
The state government, however, is not appointing any committee for resurvey of the six mines but awaiting the judgment of the Supreme Court (SC) on this issue.
The state law department made it clear that the CEC could act on its own on any complaint it receives either through the SC or directly from individuals on matters concerning the environment.
Gali Janardhan Reddy, Karnataka Tourism Minister and owner of Obulapuram Mining Corporation Pvt Ltd, says that CEC cannot issue orders on its own and he will not suspend mining activity in Anathapur.
