Anna Hazare has announced that he would commence his indefinite fast from August 16, in opposition to what he calls the government’s watered down version of the Lokpal Bill.
However, the Union government has said that Anna Hazare will not be permitted to undertake his fast at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi police have imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in areas around the Parliament. If Anna wants to go on fast, he can do so on the outskirts of the national capital.
The social activists supporting Anna Hazare say that the UPA government is trying to stifle the anti-corruption movement by not allowing peaceful protests. They plan to approach the Supreme Court on this issue.
