K Srinivas, editor of the Telugu daily newspaper Andhra Jyothy, and journalists T. Srinivas and M. Vamsee, arrested by the police on Tuesday night, under the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act) were immediately produced before a magistrate. Since the issue is a non-bailable offence, the arrested were remanded to judicial custody until July 7 and lodged in Chanchalguda jail. They will have to move the court to get bail.
Meanwhile, the entire media personnel and social bigwigs condemned the arrests. Even balladeer Gaddar termed the action of the police. The journalists unions are contemplating massive protests against the arrest of their colleagues.
It appears that the state is going to witness a bitter caste and class war. The issues of freedom of expression and the role of the press as a watch dog will also come into the fore.
