7.8 magnitude earthquake hits China

An earthquake, which struck at 1158 (IST), jolted vast swathe of China sending waves of panic as thousands of people came out of high rise buildings and poured into the streets in cities including Beijing and Chinas economic hub Shanghai, where Chinas tallest building Jinamo tower was also evacuated.
At least 5000 people were killed and nearly 900 students were feared buried in devastated areas of southwest China where a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck on Monday morning. Hundreds of people were also injured in the tremor which had rattled buildings in several cities across the country and southeast Asia.
