Union textile minister Dayanidhi Maran handed over his resignation today to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after he was named by the CBI in the 2G spectrum allocation scam. After Raja, he is the second DMK minister to quit the cabinet in connection with 2G scam.
Maran’s resignation comes ahead of a cabinet reshuffle that is likely to take place next week. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was under pressure to drop him to signal a tough stance against corruption cases that have emerged in recent times..
Maran’s exit from the union cabinet places the DMK-Congress alliance in the UPA government under strain. Congress is said to have already opened backroom channels to discuss with Mulayam Singh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Jayalalitha for possible support of their parties to UPA.
