Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was detained at Delhi’s IGI Airport on Sunday evening for trying to leave India with over $124,000 in cash. The singer and his troupe have given a series of concerts in the country.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence recovered $50,000 from Khan’s check-in baggage, $50,000 from his assistant and $24,000 from his manager’s hand baggage. The troupe was also carrying two demand drafts of $10,000 and $8,646.
Indian laws allow up to $5,000 in cash, or US$ 10,000 in traveler’s cheques while going abroad.
Along with Khan, his troupe manager, the event company manager and other troupe members have been detained for questioning and face arrest.
