Octopus becomes functional from August 15
The commandoes of the elite counter-terror force, Organisation to Counter Terrorist Operations (Octopus), will tackle terror attacks on important installations like the Tirumala temple, Isro rocket launching centre at Sriharikota and the Visakhapatnam and Kakinada sea ports apart from protecting the state capital. The first unit of 250 commandos will be made available from August 15.
A decision was taken to make the Octopus a commando wing and removing FIR and investigation powers from it. Octopus will be under the control of the director-general of police.
The counter-intelligence cell, which is currently only an intelligence collection wing, will hereafter have FIR and investigation powers. It will be controlled by the additional DG of Intelligence.
Octopus will be a commando unit like the Greyhounds and may be headed by a DIG or an IG. The CI cell will be headed by an IG. It will also take over the investigation role of Octopus.
