The Wodeyar dynasty had been one of the most powerful south Indian royal families and ruled Mysore from the 14 century till early 19’century. After the death of Srikanthadatta Wodeyar in 2013, his adopted son Yaduveer Wodeyar has been made the crown prince today and would ascend the throne during the royal festival in Dusshera.
Legend says that the Wodeyar Family will never have a proper heir, and all alternate generations have been adopted. This curse was reportedly placed by Alamelamma, wife of Tirumala Raya of the erstwhile Vijayanagar empire. She was a devotee of Sri Ranganatha and his consort and when she was harassed by Wodeyar’s soldiers to part with the jewels of Sri Ranganatha and Goddess Ranganayaki, she jumped in the river Kaveri and cursed the Wodeyar dynasty to become barren and that the place (Talakkad and Malangi)to turn into a sand mound.
This 16’ century curse has been affecting the royal family and ruling records show no proper heir except for a few exceptions since then and those two places are mostly sand mounds. Yaduveer Wodeyar is the adopted son of Pramoda Devi Wodeyar.
