An earth quake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale struck in the Indian Ocean off Andaman Islands early today.
A tsunami alert for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh was issued by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and was later cancelled.
An official at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services said a tsunami warning had not been issued..
The quake occurred in the Indian Ocean at a depth of 33 km and was centered at 260 km north of Port Blair. The US Geological Survey said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.7, struck at 1:55 a.m. in Tuesday.
Though tremors were felt in Andaman Islands, there were no reports of loss of lives or damage to property.
