Tragedy struck over 50 children in the central suburb of Ambernath in Mumbai as they started playing Holi. The yellow colour the kids bought might have contained harmful chemicals.
Immediately after spraying those colours on each other as is wont in Holi revelry, all those children have been admitted to Ulhasnagar central hospital in a semi-conscious state with chemical-related poisoning on Wednesday afternoon. 16 children are said to be in critical condition.
The children initially suffered stomach cramps and began vomiting. The doctors suspect that the harmful chemicals in the Holi colour used by them could have either seeped into their bodies through the pores of their skin or may have been mistakenly ingested as the colour powder is usually mixed in water and sprayed on the faces.
The children are in the age group of 7 to 13 years and belong to the working class settlements of Balaji Nagar, Bhaskar Nagar and New Bhendipada in Ambernath (west) of Mumbai.
