Andhra Pradesh has earned the dubious distinction of being one among the top five states in the country to record the maximum number of cases of dowry harassment. About 30 per cent of the 295 women prisoners in the state are those convicted for dowry harassment.
Those behind bars on charges of dowry harassment largely comprise mothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, co-sisters and aunts. Around 10,000 cases of dowry harassment are registered in the state every year.
Prisons department officials say the number of women being convicted in dowry harassment cases is rising with more women approaching police stations to file dowry harassment cases. Other than education and awareness about their rights, the support from women’s organisations too has played a major role in motivating women to file police cases against harassment for dowry by in-laws.
