7.7 level eartquake in Nicobar Islands: Tsunami warning issued
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a regional tsunami watch for all areas of the Indian Ocean, following a 7.7-magnitude earthquake near Nicobar Islands in the Indian territory. The Hawaii-based warning center said that a tsunami watch is in effect for India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, for other areas of the Indian Ocean region,” .
A major quake hit the Indian Ocean Sunday, around 160 kilometres (100 miles) from Nicobar Islands, the US Geological Survey said. Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a destructive local tsunami and sometimes a destructive regional tsunami along coasts located usually no more than a thousand kilometres (620 miles) from the earthquake epicentre.
