With Mumbai blasts shaking the nation, the Hyderabad Police pulled the alarm a week after. The city police have sought 600 additional closed-circuit television cameras. They have already identified 600 most vulnerable spots to install them. As of now, there are 225 CCTV cameras in the Hyderabad police commissionerate limits while there are 55 in the Cyberabad police jurisdiction. Police is expecting more than 2000 CCTVs to be provided to them to install based on the priority in a phased manner.
All is well. But Police commissioner A K Khan’s comments are beckoning new questions. He says the cameras are being used for “various purposes”. Khan lists out different objectives behind the plan, “Apart from traffic regulation, they are useful in maintaining law and order. We have used the camera feed to nab some accused during communal clashes last year and the ongoing Telangana agitation”. This sounds as if he put Telangana movement on par with terrorism. Was it really so?
