We Are Family Movie Review
We Are Family of Dharma Productions is an official Hindi remake of Hollywood’s 1998 Susan Sarandon-Julia Roberts-Ed Harris starrer Stepmom. But the remake has been an Indianised version that is quite appealing.
Aman (Arjun Rampal) is in love with Shreya (Kareena Kapoor) but there is a twist. Aman has three kids from his previous marriage, Aleya (Aanchal), Ankush (Nominath Ginsburg), and Anjali (Diya Sonecha). Divorced from Aman, Maya (Kajol) is a perfect mother who does everything right for her kids. Things go wrong when Arjun introduces Shreya to the kids, who hate her. A quirk of fate brings Maya, Shreya, Aman and the kids into one house where they have to live together. The rest of the story deals with how Aman resolves his problem.
Kajol is superb in essaying her role. Kareena rises to the occasion and gives a very good performance. Arjun Rampal is able to stand up to the challenge of the talented duo of Kajol and Kareena. The kids Anchal, Nominath and Diya are simply lovely. All others do well aided by well etched roles.
Director Siddharth P. Malhotra on his debut has done excellent work where he is able to balance the sentiments with wry humour. The music by Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy is average. Mohanan’s cinematography is vibrant. Raju Singh’s background music enhances the narration values.
The theme of We Are Family is not new to the Indian audience but the way it is presented is novel and enjoyable. The film is worth watching for the great performances of Kajol, Kareena and Rampal.
