Top Naxalite Sambasivudu surrenders
CPI (Maoist) State Committee secretary Konapuri Ilaiah alias Sambasivudu surrendered to the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) headquarters at Begumpet, Hyderabad. He has been with the Maoist party since 1990.
The surrender of Sambasivudu is seen as a major blow to the naxalite movement in Andhra Pradesh. Sources said he developed serious differences with the Maoist central leadership.
Sambasivudu is the prime accused in over 80 cases, notably the Balimela attack on June 29, 2008, in which 38 Greyhounds cops were killed and the Alipiri landmine blast on then chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
Sambasivudu carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head.
