Tollywood and Politics
After the late Nandamuri Taraka Rama rao entered politics with his Telugu Desam party, there is an increasing tendency among a number of silver screen celebrities who are harbouring political ambitions.
The latest is Chiranjeevi who founded the Praja Rajyam Party. There are many other film stars in between who have contested elections on behalf of one political party or the other.
Now Tollywood is coming out with films that have political overtones.
Dasari Narayana Rao, former Union Minister and leader of the Congress party, came out with the film Mestry where there was indirect indictment of Chiranjeevi’s PRP.
Praja Rajyam leader, Posani Krishna Murali of Operation Duryodhana fame, is directing a movie titled Raja Vaari Chepala Cheruvu, which is stated to be a satire on the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.
Narendra Naidu is producing, directing and acting in a movie titled Nene Mukhya Mantrini Ayithe which is having Censor Board troubles allegedly because this film criticizes the Congress party.
In the film Prajanayakudu, directed by P.C. Adithya, there are look-alikes of the Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu, Dr YS RajasekharReddy of Congress, Chiranjeev of PRP, K Chandrasekhar Rao of TRS and other political leaders.
Jagapathi Babu is acting in a film Adhinetha, being directed by V Samudra, which portrays how an ordinary common man rises to the post of chief minister while lampooning the present political culture.
CC Reddy is coming out with an untitled silent film starring Brahmanandam as the protagonist wherein the AP chief minister Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy enacts himself as the CM.
Director Veer Shankar is making a film titled Yuva Rajyam, which incidentally is also the name of the youth wing of PRP headed by Pawan Kalyan.
It looks like that this summer, the people of Andhra Pradesh are heading for a heady mix of Politics and Tollywood political films.
