Shivraj Patil resigns, Chidambaram takes over Home
As an immediate political fall-out of the recent Mumbai Mayhem, Shivraj Patil Union Home Minister submitted his resignation, which has been forwarded to President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who had accepted the same with immediate effect.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who served as Minister of State for Internal Security in the Home Ministry in the Rajiv Gandhi Cabinet in 1984, has been appointed as the new Home Minister.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will hold the additional charge of the Finance Ministry.
There are reports that the heads of IB and RAW may also roll. Even the National Security Advisor may be replaced by retired Army Chief.
