New York helmed by Kabir Khan is a gripping saga of right and wrong with terrorism as the backdrop superbly crafted on celluloid.
The entire story takes place in New York. The story opens with Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) arriving in New York on a scholarship to study. He happens to meet Maya (Katrina Kaif) and Sam (John Abraham) who are NRIs and staying in New York. Sam, Maya and Omar bond into friendship and have a good time. Omar understands the complex culture of America through the interpretations of Sam and Maya. After two years of being together, Omar relocates to Philadelphia.
Then an incident happens which has the stamp of terrorists. Then the lives of Omar, Sam and Maya turn topsy-turvy. Roshan (Irrfan Khan), an FBI officer enters the scene as an investigating officer, who suspects Sam with terrorist connections. He plans to play Omar against Sam to find the truth. Will the three continue to be friends after the trauma of police excesses? You will have to see the film for the brilliantly conceived and executed climax.
John Abraham gives a splendid performance. It can be said that the role of Sam is one of best roles essayed by John so far. Neil Nitin Mukesh is very impressive and carries his character with conviction and credibility. The surprise package is Katrina Kaif. So far she has been confined to just glamour roles in the mainstream cinema. With an author backed role, she has given an extraordinary performance in this film. Irrfan Khan, as usual, gives a power-packed display of histrionics.
The film New York is an excellently executed drama entwined with human relations and emotions with a very effective script and a gripping screenplay. Kabir Khan has created a wonderful screen experience with just four major characters. The way Sam’s past is revealed is pretty realistic. The suspense element has been so wonderfully crafted, that you will be glued to the seat until the most unexpected climax. Aseem Mishra’s cinematography is simply brilliant and so is the editing which is crisp enhancing the narration quality. All other techniques like sound design, songs, styling, structuring and presentation are simply world class. The production values are very good.
Producer Aditya Chopra of Yash Raj Films should be congratulated and thanked for offering such a splendid cinematic viewing experience through Kabir Khan’s New York. Rush to your nearest theatre to see New York. It will soon be hailed as one of the best films ever made by Bollywood.
