Malligadu Movie Review
Malligadu, the Telugu dubbed version of the Tamil film Paruthiveeran, is a violent story of a typical South Indian village beset with caste divides and ego clashes.
Mallibabu (Karthi) is an iconic village ruffian living with his doting uncle Sivayya ( Saravanan ). He is a brutal bully and has the knack of getting into trouble at the slightest provocation. He he heroically saves the life of Malli ( Priyamani ), who falls in love with him and adores him. But, Mallibabu with his care-free life style has no time for Malli.
Over a period of time, Mallibabu is moved by Malli’s love and responds by deciding to marry her. But, Malli’s father Nagayya ( Ponvannan ) turns to be a stumbling block. When Nagayya wants get Malli married to another person, she elopes with Mallibabu.
The lovers are overwhelmed by the conspiracy of circumstances and even a ruthless fate which leads to a shocking climax.
Priyamani excels with her thespian talents and she received the National Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the original Tamil film Paruthiveeran when it was released in 2007. This was Karthi’s debut film and he also received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Saravanan and Ponvannan are quite competent in their roles. All others are adequate for the characters they played.
Director Ameer Sultan is successful in revealing the underbelly of a typical South Indian village and his delineation of the principal characters is noteworthy. But the Telugu version suffers from below par dubbing, making the dialogues and lyrics out of sync with the narration. The screenplay wavers here and there creating hurdles in the flow of story-telling reducing its velocity. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is passable but it is five years old. Cinematography is good and effectively captures the various shades of village life.
The film can be seen for the brilliant performance of Priyamani. Those who have become fans of Karthi after watching Naa Pere Siva and Awara will be disappointed.
