Luck By Chance Review
Luck By Chance is an extremely absorbing multi-layered film about two people who rise from non-entities to super stars. The protagonists of the film have dreams and they take their chances to realize them. This film has the backdrop of film making and its struggles and manipulations, superstitions and sentiments.
The story deals with two people. Sona (Konkana Sen Sarma) runs away from her house in Kanpur to make it big in the Mumbai film World. She is not entirely worldly-wise and goes on a no-holds-barred strategy to make it big. Then there is Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) who leaves a comfortable life style in Delhi to become hero in Bollywood. He is sharp, calculating and aware of the ground rules of the film making game. These two go through lot of rejection, exploitation and heart burn. They also fall in love. And then by chance luck smiles on them.
Rommy Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) is a seasoned producer who is planning to make a film with super star Zafar Khan (Hrithik Roshan). A yesteryears’ heroine Nina (Dimple Kapadia) wants to promote her daughter Nikki (Isha Sharwani) as heroine. Suddenly, Zafar walks out of the film and Vikram gets a chance to play hero. Meanwhile Sona becomes busy in TV serials.
The story leads to a surprising, exciting and meaningful climax.
Farhan Akhtar has proved that Rock on was not a flash in the pan. He gives superb performance as a struggling actor. Konkana Sen is simply brilliant. Isha is sprightly and convincing. Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia have given fascinating performances that linger for a long while. Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Kapoor and Aly Khan have essayed their roles absorbing conviction. The guest stars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan radiate in their cameos.
Zoya Akhtar proves on her debut that cinema is truly the medium of the director. The story is simple, yet fascinating. The USP of the film is the extraordinary characterization and the skillful merging of different tracks. The screenplay is one of the best so far in Bollywood. It is gripping and enticing. Dialogues and lyrics by Javed Akhtar are meaningful and packed with punch. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music could have been better, but it has no negative impact. Cinematography by Carlos Catalan is superb and frames the moods in tune with the narration. Editing and audiography are very good. The presentation is top-notch. Production values are very high.
Zoya Akhtar fascinates with her mature and meaningful take on Bollywood. The characters are so real that you laugh and weep with them. This is a story that looks so rea,l saturated with credible events and incidents, and clearly brings out the brilliance of the debut director.
Luck By Chance is a never-to-miss category film, thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining.
