The Film
The Greek Drama had two facets: Comedy and Tragedy, representing a happy ending and a sad exit respectively. In the world of cinema, Comedy assumed the meaning of wit and humour. But then wit and humour requires intelligence on the part of both the presenter and the audience.
Golmaal Returns is the product of an insipid mind which assumed that even the audience is stupid enough to lap up any cheap slap-stick in the name of comedy.

The Synopsis
Gopal (Ajay Devgan) is tormented by his suspicious wife Ekta (Kareena Kapoor) . Her sister Esha (Amrita Arora) and brother-in-law Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor) stay with them.
One night Gopal rescues Meera (Celina Jaitly) from goondas and both of them had to stay on yacht the entire night. The following day, to escape from the ire of his wife, Gopal invents a fictitious friend called Anthony Gonsalves, and tells his wife that he stayed with him. Ekta is not convinced and writes a letter to Anthony asking him to come and talk with her about the night he spent with her husband. She posts the letter to the fictitious address given by Gopal.

To take cover, Gopal requests a colleague in his office, Laxman (Shreyas Talpade), to impersonate as Anthony Gonsalves. But two twists spoil Gopal’s game. One: A dead body is found on that fateful night and Esha’s boyfriend Madhav (Arshad Warsi), a policeman, suspects Gopal in the alleged murder. Two: The real Anthony Gonsalves turns up.

The rest of the story deals with untangling the misunderstandings.

The Performance

Golmaal Returns Cinema Review - a cheap slap-stick comedy

Shreyas Talpade and Tusshar Kapoor give a spirited performance. Ajay Devagan and Kareena Kapoor appear to enact their roles reluctantly. Arshad Warsi and Amrita Arora do not have any scope to perform.
The rest of the artistes just go through their motions.

The Techniques
Rohit Shetty, who has given money-spinners with Zameen, Golmaal and Sunday, disappoints with Golmaal Returns. Though the story situation has the appropriate twists, the incidents leading to resolve the tangle are most inappropriate. The screenplay and dialogues are pale and flaccid. Music has nothing to rave about.
The other technical aspects fade into insignificance because of the stale treatment of the story narration.

The Verdict
Cinematic comedy derives a laugh-riot through perfect timing of imperfect situations, unexpected twists and turns, crisp one-liners and crunchy expressions.
Golmaal Returns indulges in antique antics. Monkey-ing in the name of comedy is OK. But donkey-ing with the script to make someone laugh is simply unacceptable.

The Rating
1.5 out of 5
