The Beijing Olympics 2008 opened on Friday evening with a spectacular burst of fireworks at a mind-blowing ceremony that celebrated the best of ancient Chinese history. A huge party of 2,008 drummers, in various rhythms of percussion, beat the countdown to the Games.
More than 80 world leaders, including US President George W Bush and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, joined 91,000 spectators in the futuristic Bird’s Nest stadium for the opening ceremony. The global television audience was expected to exceed one billion viewers.
Welcoming the world leaders, President Hu Jintao said, “The world has never needed mutual understanding, mutual toleration and mutual cooperation as much as it does today.”
